About Stratum Biomatrix
A new standard for research-grade collagen
We are a UK biotechnology company developing ultra-pure, non-mammalian collagen biomaterials for biomedical research. Our flagship product, SBM-COL1, is produced from sustainably farmed Nile tilapia.
Our Mission
Enabling better tissue engineering research
Mammalian collagen has long been the default scaffold material in tissue engineering and 3D cell culture. But it comes with real problems: batch-to-batch variability, endotoxin contamination, and the risk of BSE/TSE transmission. We started Stratum Biomatrix to address those problems directly.
By sourcing from sustainably farmed Nile tilapia and applying thorough quality control at every stage of production, we aim to supply a collagen that researchers can rely on, batch after batch.
Scientific Rigour
Every batch is characterised by SDS-PAGE, LAL endotoxin assay, DSC thermal analysis, and CD spectroscopy before release.
Non-Mammalian Safety
Tilapia origin removes all BSE/TSE risk and avoids the ethical concerns associated with porcine and bovine sourcing.
Reproducibility
Controlled aquaculture and extraction protocols deliver lot-to-lot consistency that mammalian sources struggle to match.
Researcher Partnership
We work directly with academic PIs and industry scientists to support protocol development and application optimisation.
Our Location
Registered in the UK, operating from Discovery Park
Stratum Biomatrix is a registered UK company. Our laboratory operations are based at Discovery Park in Kent, home to over 150 science and technology companies. The campus provides shared laboratory infrastructure including Category 2 laboratory space, analytical instrumentation, and cold-chain logistics.

Discovery Park was established on the site of Pfizer's former global R&D headquarters. That legacy of scientific work is reflected in the infrastructure and culture of the campus today.
The Team
Founded by people who saw a gap in the market
We identified a recurring problem in biomedical research: inconsistent, mammalian-derived collagen was causing batch failures, wasted experiments, and results that could not be reproduced. We founded Stratum Biomatrix to offer a better alternative.
